Acclaimed game designer Roberta Williams revives Colossal Cave as a retro, point-&-click, cave exploration puzzler. Based on the original 1970’s design by Will Crowther & Don Woods, the origin of adventure games, this 3D update maintains its vintage charm, while revitalizing it for modern audiences.
A classic, both now and then. I played this game a lot as a teenager, about 40 years ago on my C64. Cascades of memories pops up when I now play it on the Quest. It's so surprising, exciting, and fun!!! Back then I drew up maps of the different caves on paper sheets, that was laying across the entire floor of my room. In some caves I think "this is pretty much as I imagined it back then", and others are like "this is absolutely nothing like I imagined back then". I just finished the game with 320 of 350 point. A start over for the hunt for the last 30 point is soon to start. The only "problem" with this game is that the hours go by as minutes. It's really addictive. I was a little hesitant when I saw the bad reviews of the early versions, but the developers clearly have enhanced the playability in the later versions. I'm so glad I took the chance and bought it. It's a 5 star game, no doubt. And to the developers: Please bring us more of those classic adventure games!
Almost There... But Not Quite. AN ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC IDEA — frustratingly marred by a "willfully poor grasp" of what people in 2023 have come to expect from VR experiences in terms of even BASIC intuitive UI standards and graphical polish. Please Patch This Game ASAP With The Following Fixes:
• A HEAD-BASED movement direction toggle (biggest frustration hands down).
• Voiceover lines should repeat as SILENT TEXT CAPTIONS… instead of annoyingly repeating the same files over-and-over again.
• Add a THIRD control profile that does away with the grip + trigger combo entirely.
• Allow us grab/activate things 'DIRECTLY'… using grip button only...
• Stop forcing us to use the clunky classic inventory menu as our SOLE means of being able to 'do things' in a world we are ALREADY PHYSICALLY IN. Instead, ‘hybridize’ the menu concept: Use the menu exactly the way it is currently… but also let us use ‘grip button’ to EASILY PULL ITEMS OFF THE INVENTORY MENU ALTOGETHER. That way, we can examine items up close as actual objects in our hands. From there, it’s ‘point at the ground with an item in-hand’ and release to drop it… or aim at applicable situations, with an item in-hand, and release to use the items directly. In other words, give us a choice between using the classic point-and-click adventure game menu system, AND the pre-established intuitiveness levels we are accustomed to seeing in 2023 VR.
• Eyeball and Hand Icons should turn off COMPLETELY when not on an interactive surface. Or at LEAST color tint the icons/affect their opacity to signify I’m about to repeat a voice file by clicking.
• Add AUTO-SAVES.
• Let us customize the 'end look' of the visuals match the way this stuff looked in OUR Mind's Eye (and “Hide The Jank” of the glaringly dated 3D game assets) with stackable post effects. 2 ALT Color/Sat profiles (colorful & muted). B&W Mode. Selective Color Mode. 2-bit Posterized Color. Toon/Comic Shaders. A Retro-Pixelized Mode, Etc. All common tricks to dress up Quest 2 visuals.
Needs southpaw support. This is my first time playing Colossal Cave and so far I'm having a great time with one exception and that's the lack of 1-hand mode or at least customizable controls. I had a stroke 3 years ago which limits the use of my right hand but the game places all of the pointer controls on the right controller. I couldn't even get past the language selection screen when the game first launches without having to use the right controller. That is the only reason I'm giving this 4 stars instead of 5 is the lack of consideration for disabled people. At the very least it needs an option to swap the left and right controllers.
I REALLY want to like this game. I was excited to have one of my first games ever played reimagined for VR. I bought the game as soon as I saw it was available. Unfortunately, I can't play for more than 5 minutes before I have to take the headset off due to the extreme nausea the movement causes! I have found that games with teleport style movement don't affect me as much as that smooth glide that Colossal Cave has. I love that the game seems to have maintained the original style. I like the narrator and enjoyed the graphics while I was standing still. I am going to request a refund. I hope if a fix to the movement is found that allows players like me, that are prone to dizziness in VR, to play comfortably. If a fix is made, will someone message me? I will re-purchase the game in a heartbeat.
Really fun and nostalgic. Absolutely lives up to the old texted adventure game and makes it super fun and modern virtual reality! Totally worth every penny.
To Roberta Williams. I loved the original txt versions of all these adventures way back in the 80’s on my BBC micro and later on PC. Are you converting any of the other txt adventures ? Would be fantastic if all were done.
Limited, and still has bugs. The interface isn't easy, perhaps due to trying to keep it old school, but an option to do it in a new modern way might help. At the end of the game, twice now, I blew up the wall but a bug didn't show it coming down or the office beyond. I heard her talking and I could walk through an apparently solid wall to see the final, but there is a flaw in the Quest 2 version, anyway.
I am Roberta Williams - About rel 2.0. When evaluating this game, please consider the following. Our initial release received some negative feedback. I will confess that it was well deserved. It was our first VR release and we had some learning to do. Over the last 11 months we have continued working on our VR release and put a huge amount of effort into addressing every concern we saw in any review. The list of updates is huge: We added additional modes of locomotion, integrated tutorials, autosave, new graphics, more sound effects, footstep sounds, performance enhancements, etc. The game that is available today is not the same as what we initially released. Thank you to everyone who has played the game or will play the game. I'm very proud of the game and hope you will enjoy the game!

great for explorers. If you like games that don't hold your hand and you love to explore then get this game!
Get a guide (as you'll likely need one). This takes you back to a time when people paid for guides to games (or before then?) But remimagined in a beautiful VR world.
Great nostalgia. What a trip down memory lane from the Willie Crowther original! Once the teleport mode was implemented so I could get over the nausea, I loved this. Any chance you’ll tackle Zork next?
Cool game! I like caves and I like exploring so I like this game. At least 4 stars. Negative reviews are mostly based on issues that no longer exist. I can get motion sickness but I didn’t in this game and i used classic movement and made the speed faster. You learn the game by playing and learn from your mistakes. I did make one mistake that rendered the game unfinishable. Now I know for next time. At least I still got to see everything. The biggest tip may be to save often and save multiple slots. $40 is definitely too much for the length. Got it on sale for $20 which is much more reasonable. The only thing I didn’t like were the mazes. Witt’s End makes no sense. DO NOT enter unless you need batteries and look up the route to get in and out online.
Colossal cave. This game is phenomenal! This game just doesn't end of discovered new places and I've just crossed the bridge where a giant troll I had to give him a diamond. This game just goes on and on is my point it's beautiful. The only problem I have as a disabled person is the controls are a little confusing and if you have trouble with your hands The controls can be cumbersome when you're trying to push a button and you end up squeezing the trigger underneath the controller and you do something else or when you're trying to grab an item out of your inventory and you can't it keeps disappearing because you've accidentally hit another button can be very frustrating. However overlooking all those problems this game is really fantastic and I hope they make a sequel or make more VR games I love Cycus entertainment! PLEASE MAKE MORE GAMES!
Just finished downloading... Just bought the game and just finished downloading.... I'm from that era and played many non graphic adventure games back in the day. Wasn't very sure if I'm going to like it or hate it after all the various reviews about movement, head tracking and grabbing items with a cursor instead of virtual hands.
In the meantime, here is 25percent off to help you decide... Just add the beginning part.

Thank you,enjoy.
Will update my review, once I start playing.
23/1/23 update
Do,I've started to play this and I've earned 61 points so far and lost in the maze of caves now, lol. Been playing it for about an hour and to be honest I'm actually liking the game so far and the controls seems fine to me and very straight forward,no issues at all and the movement is fine with the controller's. Picking things up and looking around and using them or dropping them. You can run ,if you find the walking to slow and if your still not happy with the game, you can always get a refund.
Definitely a keeper for me and I like this type of adventure game, exploring and solving puzzles. Graphics seem fine for the quest and so far haven't noticed any glitches. Well done on creating this classic remake masterpiece,I personally think everything works great together, from what I have played.
Thank you.

Old School RPG. Colossal Cave is a 1970's text based RPG reimagined in Virtual Reality. The game has all the elements you want if you are an old school gamer. The best part about this is it is very simple to play and is very well made. The game lets you take in all the visuals that you may have though about in your head from back in the day! If you are a fan of those old school rpgs when games were simple and easy. This is it for you!

Beautiful, perfect, and immersive. I get it. Most of the popular games in VR involve guns and violence and murdering anything that moves. So I understand when a game comes around that doesn’t allow you to do that, that people respond with poor reviews.
In full transparency, I’m 50 years old and grew up playing text adventures, dreaming of a day when something like VR would be a reality.
To Meta, and anyone else who cares, THIS type of game is the reason I bought a headset to begin with. It’s also the reason why when I want to play an immersive RPG that I continue to fire up Skyrim (and I know you need a PC to play it). Anyway, this game is one of the few rare games on the Quest that captures that feeling for me.
