Creativity and Quality. When I first saw the living weapons, I thought back to how much I enjoyed Oddworld: Stranger's Wrath, and that's really all I needed to be interested. When I got the game, I didn't really know what to expect and was happily surprised to find a high-end story driven Metroid style game.
There was 1 glitch that I encountered the entire time in which I entered a room, but all the doors were red as of there were enemies, then I had to walk through the only open door, which would then close. At that point, I could go back into the room and leave any way I wanted. Weird, but not at all harmful, and took only an extra few seconds to work around. This single glitch makes this the most glitch free game I've ever played on Quest 2 or 3! So congrats on a job well done. The previous winner was Puzzling Places, and I really didn't expect such an elaborate game to be so well done on Quest. That's sad, but when even the highest end, Walking Dead 2 was a game breaking glitch fest, it starts to ruin the whole thing. So your team is restoring my faith that quality VR can be made, and for a shockingly good price.
So, excellent gameplay, great story, great voice acting, fantastic moody synth music here and there, awesome price, fun weapons, cool creepy baddies, and all-around fun. It took me a little under 6 hours.
I really hope there will be a Genotype 2, but I'll definitely keep an eye on this team.
Top Notch VR Game! This game is fantastic. I just completed it and can't wait to replay it. It has the feel of Metroid Prime. The story was entertaining, compelling, and mysterious. The gameplay was smooth and bug free. I thoroughly enjoyed this game and highly recommend it!
The thing meets Metroid and falls in luv. This horror movie is amazing...wait it's not a movie? It should be,I love the retro computers, mre packs, the voice acting, the lighting, the music,I realy wish Kurt Russel and Keith David would bust in through the door and carry me away to saftey, the entire vibe of the game is so cool,I feel like I'm in base 211 for real,a nice Vacation in new Swabia, lol. The enemies are plenty and well varied, the spitter fully upgraded is beefy, the grubber is a good way to save up for ammo, you are in an underground facility all Stephen Greer style, but it feels very open and free roaming. I wonder where the DNA came from... Lol I like to imagine it came from a meteor that fell in the ice a long time ago from the aldebaran... maybe it's always been here, darn gain of function research just means bioweapons, silly scientists and those manipulating words. This is a great game, the devs are wonderful. This feels like a console game imo,it's very well thought out and I haven't had any buggy issues, the upgrades and new weapons come all at the right times, going back and exploring is a fun part. One of the best titles on VR,I was playing assassin's creed and asguard wrath 2 earlier this week, but this title has kinda taken over. It's good one
On a side note If i could make games,it would be ww2 setting but with this overtone, experiments go wrong by reverse swastika goose steppers in a sleepy Bavarian town with a creepy castle/base/lab/dungeon and oss and naval Intel sent sends a team but they die and a local who speaks English finds the radio...but I don't know how to make games sadly. I wish there was someone who could.
How will any other game live up to this?. I finished the game last night...and without giving spoilers, I'll just say I was Heart broken and cried. But, I truly hope you guys are working on another game that will be coming out soon. The story telling was magnificent, the creativity (especially with the weapons), the graphics, the SOUND ENGINEERING (MUST play this game with headphones!). The fact that it felt open world, but you were still led through... i appreciated the added difficulty levels. I dont claim to be great at games, i enjoy the stories. And playing on easy let me enjoy that. This game was a masterpiece, *standing ovation*
Cool game. Absolutely Brilliant from the opening scene and story I was hooked, great graphics, great story, and the exploration of the base was well done, highly addictive I just couldn’t put it down. Have to say a big thank you to the devs please give us more. Thoroughly enjoyed the experience a wonderful creation
This is the type of game I want in VR. Genotype is very reminiscent of Metroid and BioShock to me. Both being games I really enjoyed means I like this one a lot. The fact that I get to experience it in VR is extra amazing. I don't have a lot of time to play games so I am very picky about what I take time to play.
My quest 2 is only a year old so I probably won't upgrade to a 3 soon, but the idea of playing more games like this in the future with better graphics and FOV keeps me excited about the future of mobile VR. The atmosphere of the game and the immersion of VR makes games like this so satisfying to me. I very much hope to see more sci-fi titles like genotype and red matter coming to the quest.
A fun Metroidvania that you can’t ignore. I just finished AW2 and I was looking for a new full length game (that isn’t a roguelike) and Genotype came from the left field amaze me.
I can’t help but compare the two games together, being on the adrenaline rush that AW2 offered, and between the two Genotype is just missing the “sense of grandeur” and the extensive lore of AW2 but everything else is on par or better in Genotype.
Genotype is a true modern Metroidvania (more of the Metroid part than the Vania part). The exploration is what’s shine in the game, and the fights don’t get in the way of it, even if this means that the pacing is a little weird sometimes. The bosses aren’t that hard, I wish they moved a bit more or varied their attacks, but they still fit the pacing and theme of the game. If I could I would remove half a star to the rating, over the bosses… most times you wonder if they were bosses or just larger versions of the other critters.
The UI is simple by to the point, it has to me the most fluid interactions in any VR games I have played. You want a map on your left while exploring? Just look left and press a button! Not that there isn’t annoyances. For example, the inventory only shows the bottom of each items facing the played, making it hard to know what everything is sometimes. Still, the interactions with objects in the game is just well designed. The whole world can be explored without ever opening a menu screen…
And then there is the weapon system, which is just as inspired as the UI. In the beginning it’s weird and it looks childish, but then you realize how ideal everything is for VR. You want to grab something with your gun holding hand? Just do it! The gun is not in the way! You don’t have to hold the gun, being forced to hold the grab button all the like in most other games, which just shows how much they thought about it. I still have cramps from holding the axe in AW2…
What’s more, this game makes scavenging fun again. The way you use items is quick and painless, the loot container have doors and latches made for VR interaction (you never have to fight with a handle trying to pull open any doors, a plague in most other games). There is a million details that show how much they thought about everything.
And finally the graphics… I play on the Quest 2 and I was just aghast at the interiors. It not only feels like a sci-fi base, it looks like it in ways that is just amazing. Everything is so blocky, with sharp edges, obviously for the poly count, but it’s integrated in the art style so well. The base is some brutalist inspired architecture, every props are brutalist, etc. They married theme and performance seamlessly to work together.
Tl;dr: This game is fun and worth any gamers time, especially if you like Metroidvanias. It’s not a hardcore shooter, but it’s not a boring one either. Expect to walk around a lot.
