Boomer Shooter. If you’re looking for an updated version of a Boomer Shooter style game in VR, this is the game you are looking for. Loved it. Brings back memories of playing Doom, Heretic, Hexen and a few others. This game is super trippy. With that said it did take me a month of playing in short doses to get beyond a sense of vertigo. But end the end I thoroughly enjoyed this game and am hoping to see Black Labyrinth in the future.
A very faithful VR port. This is basically just the PC version of Amid Evil but with VR controls. Its already a game, and this was a fairly smooth transition to VR.
Visually it does seem to have more texture filtering, so it ends up not quite looking as good as the original, and I'm hoping to see a Quest 3 upgrade at some point.
Much like most fps titles in VR, this game can cause motion sickness pretty easily. There are some accessibility options to help with that, but theres only so much that can be done without compromising the gameplay.
Excellent game overall, and one of the better action games on quest.
Finally a full fledged PC shooter. Aren't we all tired of quest games that are mostly just a proof of concept? I know I am tired of the endless onslaught of VR rougelikes that hide their lack of content with various tricks. Although I find some of them fun, I yearn for more games like Resident Evil 4, that were made on a different platform with a different design perspective.
On pc and consoles CONTENT matters, LEVEL DESIGN matters. A game that takes 4 hours to complete, or a game where you've seen all there is in 2 hours just wouldn't sell. Unfortunately on quest they do. That's why I'm so happy that New Blood Interactive dropped a full fledged game, that is full of levels, weapons, difficulty, variety - everything that the usual quest games lack. Level design is phenomenal. It has the best music out of all retro shooters. Doom, quake - those games didn't have the epicness of what we can hear here. The weapons make use of motion controlls in a suprisingly fun way.
BUY THE GAME so that they give us Ultrakill and Dusk. A lot hangs on how well this game sells and I have to tell you it's worth buying if you like single player FPP shooters.
If you want to get it cheaper, here ocul dot us/3Ag0aeb
Such a pity. Well, I WAS having a really good time with this game. I got all the way to the arcane expanse level 3 and I cannot progress any further. There's one section where you're supposed to do a double water bubble jump and then a triple water bubble jump to get up to the 3rd floor to get the silver key, and it's completely impossible. I have been trying this same exact jump for close to an hour now, hundreds of attempts, and I simply cannot get past that 3rd bubble and onto the 3rd floor. I'm essentially stuck, unable to progress because of 1 jump being like a nanometer out of reach. I really hope the devs address this because I was having an absolute blast with the game up until this point
Pay attention developers. Every Thursday I log on to Oculus hoping for a new exciting game to play on my withering headset. Every Thursday I see one of three things. New Zombie game, a repetitive talentless rogue lite game, or a cute puzzle game. Hundreds of them, thousands. Copying each other to ad nauseum results.
Amid Evil is simple in graphics but incredibly fun. It understands the hardware it's running on and takes advantage of it. No cheap rogue lite game play to trick the player into thinking the developer knows how to make a true game by making you die and lose everything. No zombie simulator. Just a fun action shooter with multiple weapons and secrets to discover.
Has this genre existed for ages? Oh, hell yes it has. But in a medium over bloated by copy cat garbage rogue games, it's a breath of fresh air.
Decent VR Boomer Shooter. Kids will definitely have fun with this game. Playing the game feels like doom mixed with cheap knockoff movie swords and other weapons you'd find only at Dollar Tree or General.
So instead of smacking your parents or siblings with a cheap knockoff weapon you can go wild on the variety of monsters they have in the game.
Overall the game gets very repetitive as you go around finding keys to open doors while slaying enemies to get to the exit to fight a boss at the last level. Wish you could do more with the weapons such as upgrading them and make it do different things permantly instead of relying on a temporary power-up.
Level designs are alright but I think the PC version has slightly better visuals and some levels seem to be weird where you have to rocket jump your way to get around, which rocket jumping is actually pretty fun in the game but I wish the game offered perks to our character such as double jump and such.
In addition FPS can drop hard and map can become glitchy if you refuse to kill enemies and let a lot gather on you.
Meh. Pretty samey, very buggy, wouldn’t fly on a proper platform.
Progression is confusing, possibly broken. At some point I’m brought back to a previously completed level, and I’m honestly not invested enough in this mess to figure out why. Another lazy ‘retro experience’ that isn’t good enough to call a full game. Dummies keep five-starring mediocre stuff like this and keeping the medium disappointing. Gotta get too close to dumb rune hints to get them to translate, so close that you can’t read the translations. That level of attention to detail explains all the other bugs you’ll endure trying to complete this lazy excuse for a game.
Solid port of (long!) old game 4.7. Save 25 % on this and other titles at jackquest.wordpress.com
If you just want some mindless demon killing with weird weapons in strange castles with secret rooms, this is your game. It's a bit fast paced so may cause nausea more than slow-walking games.
I was basically sold after smashing the first enemy. It is satisfying.

Part of my script👇
Amid Evil sees you turn from a HERETIC into a champion tasked with freeing the ancient lands to reclaiming some sacred weapons. The rest of the story is told in text around the words but to be honest it’s not important as simply a weak excuse to kill everything. The weapons in Amid Evil are fantastically crazy and aside from the default Axe can all be used as upclose and ranged weapons. You have 8 to choose from and my favourites are the wizard wand, the trident, the evil looking staff that shoot miniature planets and moons (including earth) and a spike use club that fires shards to pin your enemies against walls. Looking at that list that is actually most of the weapons.. anyway they all have an alternate firing mode when you summon your over powered souls power. Soul power is charged by collecting… you guessed it! The Souls of your enemies.
Great port of a retro shooter. If you enjoy the old school boomer shooter of strafing, secret area finding, speed running, and gibbing - this is your game. Translated very well over to VR and I appreciate how smooth the port runs natively.
I have a few niggles that are preventing a 5 star rating. First of all, I had an issue with the end of level screen not allowing me to continue to the next area. It was just the blue misty effect with no other image present and some black glitches when I looked around quickly. Had to exit out of the app and restart.
Secondly, the grip triggers are far too sensitive. I'm constantly switching weapons unintentionally to my left hand and vice versa when I barely brush the button. This also causes me to throw the axe when I'm intending to just swing it. Maybe adding an option in the menu to disable the right or left grip button would help alleviate this annoyance.
Aside from that, I'm very happy with this port and hope to see Dusk and Ultrakill given the VR treatment. I grew up with Doom, Quake, Heretic, etc when they were the cream of the crop in terms of tech so it's really cool to be able to play these homage games in immersive VR.
No referral, its worth full price! Amid Evil VR was a game I was hyped for since it was announced
... And it delivers exactly what I hoped! I even held off playing the pancake version of the game for the arrival of VR, which I also bought on PC in a great bundle!
Five stars is my review the first hour with it so far, can't wait for more time to dive back in!
Retro fun. Its a fast paced retro shoot em up game focused more on gameplay than story. Im an hour in and the various weapons feel great and the gameplay is simple fun without much depth. Sounds good, could look slightly better though imo. The resolution looks low or i might be wrong. Not liking how you have to walk right up to the text on the walls to read it. Sometimes I got lost and backtracked in some levels but thats probably my fault lol. Other than these small issues its a really great game. 4.7/5
