Hellcats vs Zeros is a retro-style, WWII combat flight-sim sandbox set in the Pacific Theater. Choose between the powerful and heavily armoured US Hellcat or the light & nimble Japanese Zero. Each aircraft features a detailed and functional cockpit, assorted armaments and realistic flight characteristics.
Both Hellcat and Zero cockpits are built for VR and employ hands-on controls for an immersive piloting experience. Flip the landing gear switch, move the throttle handle, open the canopy and more! All aircraft react to damage and are fully destructible. Shooting off a wing or damaging an engine affects an aircraft’s performance.
Grab the flight stick and engage in intense, multi-aircraft dogfights, shoot down incoming bombers and destroy ground targets. Shoot down practice drones, attempt a dangerous carrier landing or just fly around. Hellcats vs Zeros features campaign missions for both aircraft and a customizable free-flight mode.

It's something. 1). No issues with airlink. 2). The graphical style is okay. Things are nicely modled. Works in most settings, except with some terrain; there's not enough contrast to judge height to the ground, so landings are a bit hit and miss. 3). Flight model is 50/50. The main issue is a lack of inertia, especially in roll. They fly a little like foamboard RC planes, which also makes them very fiddly gun platforms. I wasn't able to three-point land them, but they will ground loop. The ball is animated, but you can't coordinate. 4). Controls are 50/50 as well... some choices are odd; an attempt to simulate engine management, but no positional control of flaps even in the Hellcat that has a lever for it. Mixture seems to have no effect on engine RPM, even fully closed. These levers that do nothing should not move; too easy to grab the supercharger lever when fumbling for the throttle. 6). Holding the grip buttons all the time is uncomfortable. There's sort-of trim, but the RC-foamboard-ness makes it fiddly 5). I get the planes do not have historical performance, it's an arcade game, but there's still a lack of balance; the zero is quite difficult to kill because it will zoom-dive away from the Hellcat despite performing wasteful manouvers in the vertical. The Hellcat is very easy to follow in persuit, essentially has a performance deficit the way the AI flies it. It also seems both planes have similar reslience, which is just a no-no even for an arcade game. 6). The AI is lacking. It only has about 2 tricks and they are consistent to both airplanes. At no point in a protracted fight with the Zero did it actually attempt turn fight me or even acquire a firing position, and I did lose sight it of it at least once. I was never in danger. 7). Having japanese in the Zero is admirable, but it should have an english localisation option, especially since the aircrafts use different units. It just makes the Zero more difficult to use.
Good idea but needs work. It's a fun game. However one of my gripes with it is the hellcat. The Hellcat could out perform the zero (in Speed and power). So while I think it's fun I think the hellcat should have a better climb rate
It worked......once. It worked the first time after I purchased it, and it actuallly looked pretty decent. Now it only works up to the point where I select a campaign or quickplay. At that point the screen turns black and nothing ever happens. The game won't start. I'd give it 4 stars if it still worked. I did not purchase it anticipating to only play it once. If this is how it's gonna be, it's not worth it.
Update: I got it to work again twice, but campaign won't start consistently. I do like this app but it has some stability issues. I upped my rating to 3 stars, I'd give it 4 if it would run consistently. Maybe the developers can fix this? I can tell they've put a lot of work into this, and I realize this is still early access, so I hope they can fix this glitch. I wish them the best! I will increase my rating if they can make this more stable.
Since the update it seems stable now. The campaigns start when I select them. It's very challenging trying to shoot down enemy planes. Overall I like this game and recommend it.
Not bad, good concept just needs work. This is a good effort and when they get the controls sorted it has the potential to be a good game. It's definitely worth spending a little money to support the effort. The outside environment is a little too cartoonish for my taste, but the cockpit looks great. I would suggest that they provide support for an external flight stick as well as the touch controllers. I Also suggest they take a look at Overflight for the Gear VR for some additional ideas.
Good game but needs work. Everything in this game is great except for the AI's and tutorial. The main part of the game is to dog fight other planes however from my experience you cant even get close to them and they go way faster than you even at full speed. They do menuvers that you the player cant do yourself. Shooting targets on the ground is a breeze and the flying is pretty good. Also there are a lot of switches and levers in the cockpit that need explaining in the tutorial.
A great game! This game is almost all my hopes and dreams realized. I have always wanted to be able to fly old war birds (Specifically the F6F) and this game delivered. It can be challenging but not too challenging either. It does, however, lack a bit in the variety department. A few more playable planes or at least a new map would make this game even better than it already is!
Cannot Start Flight. Updated Review 12/20/2019 After interfacing with Zono Support, the issue of the start button in VR was that you must click a button on the left stick to start/stop the simulation and the VR button is not activated. After this I was able to fly which is fun though my hand tends to fall asleep from holding the grab button constantly. If they can make this a latch function it will be a whole lot more fun.. Thank you support staff for your prompt attention.
Original Review Not sure why, but all buttons up to the Start flight button work fine, just cannot start any flights quick or campaign.. Rift-S w/Touch. Odd others here have same equipment and show everything works for them, i have tried multiple attempts. Back to the shelf!
Fun arcady "shoot 'em up"! Works well with the Rift S and Touch controllers. Looks good - would recommend some "texturing" on the ocean to disrupt the plain appearance. I would have given this 5 stars however the cost is too high. This is really a $10 game, as it stands now. (Dec. 2019) : )
