he museum of art and archeology at the University of Missouri preserves a collection of artworks that allows us a remarkable glance of Missouri in the mid 20th century. This collection was commissioned by the owners of the former St. Louis department store Scruggs-Vandervoort-Barney. In 1946 to 1947, they hired 14 artists to travel across Missouri to depict the natural beauties, industrial activities, and cultural characteristics of the state. The artists produced almost 100 paintings, watercolors, and drawings. The patrons named their collection "Missouri - Heart of the Nation" and it toured the state as a special exhibition for three years. In 1950, the department store donated the collection to the University of Missouri, and in honor of the Missouri Bicentennial, we present this entire collection in the modern format of a virtual reality exhibition.

Great job. I see that this app was done by students. It was very nicely done. It gave a very comfortable feeling. I really like the functionality of the magnify glass as well as the enlarged tombstones. I am from Missouri and relate to the art work. The rooms and themes did a great job of bring the spirit of Missouri to others. You can see our history and out landscapes. Knowing this was done by students and not a development company makes it even more impressive.

Not bad - could have been much better. If this app wasn't free, my rating would have been 1-2 stars. The intention is great, and some effort has been put into the app. Unfortunately the developers seem inexperienced in making proper VR apps. See the Kremer Collection for how to do things right - or the newly launched The Bernard Zakheim Murals on Steam. Compared to such presentations, the Missouri-Heart of The Nation Virtual Reality Exhibition is mediocre at best. First problem, you stand too far away from the paintings, and secondly the resolution of the paintings is way too low. Again Kremer Collection is so much better there's really no comparison at all. With Kremer, each painting is scanned in extreme res, letting you see ultra-tiny cracks in the paint - such ultra-high-res does take up much space and Kremer Collection is 11GB of drive space. The Missouri-Heart of The Nation Virtual Reality Exhibition is a 350MB download and may take up 1.2GB of drive space - indicating each painting had very poor resolution, and it does look like that too. The paintings do not even look like paintings, but more like simple colored drawings - or like a collection of jpg-images. Again Kremer Collection looks like real paintings, making to feel you're seeing the real thing. Missouri-Heart of The Nation Virtual Reality Exhibition does not make you think you're seeing anything close to being real - all paintings look fake-ish and do not impress.I do not mind paying like $30 for this app, if the paintings are provided in much greater resolution - and let's have full locomotion letting users get as close to the art as they would like. Also paintings are grouped in a room/exhibition, and a guide provides a general introduction to each of the 7 sub-exhibitions. Each painting does not come with its own introduction - unlike the other art apps I've mentioned earlier. Would be great if each painting got its own introduction. As it stands, this app is mediocre at best, but with some changes it could be truly awesome.
