AAO VR Education is an immersive ophthalmology simulator developed by the American Academy of Ophthalmology and supported by the Knights Templar Eye Foundation. The simulator helps develop skills and build confidence in detecting and treating retinopathy of prematurity (ROP). Enter a virtual neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), equipped with realistic ophthalmic instruments. Examine dozens of virtual infants in a safe environment until you master all techniques.
ROP Diagnosis: Use the indirect ophthalmoscope, scleral depressor, and BIO lens to perform a retinal exam. Diagnose your patient, including severity, stage, and zone, and recommend follow-up.
ROP Treatment: Apply laser through the laser console or treat with intravitreal injection.
Practice or Test Yourself: Multiple modes let you practice with guidance or assess your clinical skills. Multiuser mode allows you to join other students or faculty in real-time.
Log in Required: Use your Academy member account to gain full access. Not an Academy member? You can still become a registered user: https://secure.aao.org/aao/CreateAccount
